Fashion gone wild

Vogue Australia goes to Africa for the launch of their new iPad app and December 2011 'Fashion Gone Wild' issue. The Vogue Australia team travelled to Botswana to shoot a range of material, which includes video footage, sound bites, fashion shoots photographed by Max Doyle, interviews with  covergirl Australian actor Isabel Lucas and interviews with the Vogue editors.

Inspired by the tribal motifs in the recent international resort collections, fashion director Naomi Smith wanted to capture the true heart of Africa.

The footage from the trip has been compiled into unique bundle which is now available on the new Vogue Australia iPad app now available for free download. The app was designed in partnership with with Belvedere Vodka, who are raising awareness for The Global Fund. An initiative it supports to help fight AIDS in Africa.
The material is great and the spreads are fabulous. I really like the cover, but as a whole, I am not totally feeling it. The concept seems a bit redundant to me. Like I have seen this kind of concept over and over again to the point that it's lost it's meaning and visual appeal for me.
I am going to buy the December issue and have a good read of it. Maybe my opinion will change! I highly doubt it though.

I agree - redundant - plus I am tired of seeing the locals being used as props...though the man to her left has stolen the shot,I think. Someone get him an agent.

I totally agree, redundant and ignorant. All they could come up with when thinking about Africa are stereotypical images and terminology?

You know I have seen this pics and I just decided not to post about it. I am tired of these people using African people like we are props and secondly have the decency to use at least an African model or an African designers.I am sure that this is not the first and won't be the last. Why should they use the ankara dress from burberry when there are plenty of talented African designers.

In this scenario with Vogue and Belvedere Vodka (supporting The Global Fund trying to fight AIDS in Africa) it would have been logical to use an African designer or African model.
I have mentioned before that I honestly think it cool seeing the likes of Burberry use Ankara. I personally see it as an artistic appropriation of something which is culturally dear to us. I see it as people acknowledging the special elements of our culture. I don't see why Ankara should only be for Africans.
There is something different about the way those big labels present Ankara, and there is something different to the way African designers present Ankara. And I love seeing those differences emerge!
